Downtown Bicycle Rack Project
Main Street Greenwood strives to create an atmosphere within the historic commercial district that both stimulates new growth and enhances the current commercial and residential population. Our organization has helped to bring decorative trash receptacles, handi-capped curb cuts and new iron benches to the District over the past 14 years. To encourage more pedestrian and cyclist traffic in our Downtown, we are leading the way for the installation of bicycle racks. Our goal is to raise funds to purchase 12-15 racks initially. As a sponsor of a bike rack, your name or organization or business name will be placed on a plaque affixed to the base of the rack. The cost of each one is only $200! This could be advertising for you for many years to come! Thank you for your support of this project and for your support of Main Street Greenwood!

This project was funded through Main Street’s Incentive Grant Program which provides financial assistance for exterior appearance improvement projects on buildings located in the Carrollton/Johnson Revitalization District. The standard for design is based on the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation of Historic Buildings. The intent of the grant program is to encourage appropriate revitalization to as many private properties in the District as possible. Projects for structures located on Johnson Street or Carrollton Avenue between Fulton Street and Lamar Street are eligible to apply for grant funding. Funding for the project was made possilbe in part by the Foundation for the Mid-South.
More than 30 go for a walk
By Taylor Kuykendall
Staff Writer for the Greenwood Commonwealth
Let’s Go Walkin’ Down Main Street is a statewide event, in its second year, that encourages citizens to walk around the Main Street district in their town.
Lise Foy, executive director of Main Street Greenwood Inc., said the event promotes a walkable downtown area as well as healthier habits for the people of Greenwood.
“It’s an opportunity to enjoy the wonderful historic architecture of Greenwood,” Foy said. “People can also window shop or just enjoy the walk.”
The route started at 9 a.m. at City Hall and followed Main Street to Front Street, where walkers flowed onto Howard and then East Johnson before circling back around to City Hall.
Beth Williams, president of Main Street Greenwood Inc., said that Main Street Greenwood is a wonderful program and inspiring people to walk around town is a great way to connect with others.
“It’s for the whole family,” Williams said. “It’s a nice kid-friendly event that encourages us all to be healthier.”
Attendance, at 33, was significantly lower than last year’s walk with about 80 participants. Foy said she believes the weather may have factored into people’s decision to stay at home.
“It’s been so rainy,” Foy said. “A lot of people probably weren’t too confident about the weather.”
The walk was sponsored by the Mississippi Main Street Association and Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Mississippi. Across the state, about 62 Main Street organizations participated in the event within their own towns.
T-Shirts were also given away at the end of the walk, though the event was non-competitive.
