Main Street Greenwood wins ‘Spirit of Main Street - Promotions’ Award

Jun 29th, 2009 by Lise | 0

The Christmas in the Delta promotion was a poster specially designed for eight Delta Communities and the BB King Museum.  The poster contained a list of all Delta holiday activities that took place in November and December.  Events included holiday open houses, lighting ceremonies, parades, art exhibits and concerts.

Each Main Street organization, Chamber of Commerce, and Convention & Visitors Bureau was invited to participate.  The design and printing cost was split evenly among the communities for a grand total of under $250 per community!  Each community received 1,000 posters to divide and display as they wished.

The organization of the project was coordinated through Greenwood’s Main Street, Chamber and CVB offices.  The design was done by Hammons & Associates in Greenwood.  The distribution process was handled by Planter’s Bank, who provided us the use of their courier system to get the posters to the respective bank locations in each community.

The merchants’ feedback for this piece was very positive.  It gave shoppers an opportunity to see all of the special events going on in the region at one time, while the merchants were able to cross-market each others communities.

The project was a true example of partnership and collaboration!

Jon Rayeski won the bike rack design competition Thursday during Main Street Greenwood’s Art Alfresco festival.
The Viking Range Corp. employee took home a $250 cash prize and a set of Viking steak knives. Hart Henson was the runner-up.

Thirteen people entered the competition. Their designs were judged on form, function and fabrication by a panel. Rayeski’s idea will come to fruition.

“We’re going to actually fabricate one rack and place it somewhere in the downtown area,” Lise Foy, Main Street Greenwood’s executive director, said. “We’ll be working with the city on a location.”

The idea is to encourage bicyclists to ride downtown.

Overall, Art Alfresco went very well, Foy said. An estimated 400 to 500 people attended, and the area was bigger than ever, stretching east and west from Fulton Street to Walthall Street and north and south from Edward Jones Investments to the Viking Cooking School. The annual event featured more than 40 artists, many of them local.

The bike rack competition was new this year. Design guidelines included:

  • Safety: A bike can be locked securely and remain upright.
  • Artistry: The rack is aesthetically pleasing and creative.
  • Relationship: It complements the surrounding area.
  • Fabrication: It is cost-effective to build and has minimal maintenance issues.
  • Space: It must accommodate at least two bicycles.
  • Materials: Elements used to build it should be made of non-combustible materials that are resistive to corrosive agents, including contact between the metal on a bike and the rack.
  • Height: The bicycle should not have to be lifted more than 6 inches to access and must be secured to the rack.
  • Art Alfresco has a new twist!

    Greenwood Greyhound Bus Station Renovation

    Feb 19th, 2009 by Lise | 0

In the fall of 1939, Dixie Greyhound Lines began construction on the building.  The architect was George Mahan of Memphis, the contractor was S.L. McGinnis of Greenwood, and JD Lanham contracted for the plumbing work.  The station operated until 2001, when Greyhound terminated service to the City of Greenwood.

The building remained vacant for 6 years until Main Street began renovation of the station for re-use as office space, with the ultimate goal of bringing the building back to its original state.  Through donations of materials and labor, the original paint scheme was restored to the exterior and one side of the interior was painted and cleaned for use.  In 2008, Main Street received a $6200 grant from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History to continue the restoration process of this Greenwood landmark.  While there is work yet to be done, the story of our bus station will be evident to future generations.

As we gather Greyhound artifacts and memorabilia, we would like to hear your stories of coming and going from the bus station.  Please share them here or email: mainstreetgreenwood@gmail.com

River to the Rails to combine with 300 Oaks

Jan 21st, 2009 by Lise | Comments Off

The committees of the River to the Rails Festival and 300 Oaks Road Race have decided to combine the two events during the designated Sept. 19th race weekend to create one big event.

“The Chamber, Main Street Greenwood and the CVB are excited about working together to combine these events for an even bigger impact on the Greenwood. We are trying to find even more ways for strengthen the community,” said Beth Stevens, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce.

River to the Rails Festival is organized by Main Street Greenwood which is usually scheduled for the month of April. The 300 Oaks race is a Chamber of Commerce event always set for September. Both are sponsored by advertising assistance grants and volunteer support from the Greenwood Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“By making this one big event, we are offering our sponsors more bang for their buck,” said Lise Foy, executive director of Main Street Greenwood. “By combining River to the Rails and 300 Oaks, we will attract an ever larger crowd to the downtown area.”

“This larger event will hopefully attract more tourists to stay overnight in Greenwood who will spend more money in our community,” said Paige Hunt, executive director of the CVB.

This is the fifth year for River to the Rails, which last year drew approximately 4,000 people to downtown Greenwood for a weekend of music, food and children’s activities. Headliners were Bobby Rush and Crossin’ Dixon. The 300 Oaks Road Race will celebrate its 28th anniversary this year. The race consistently draws approximately 1,000 runners annually for a Saturday morning 5K and 1 mile fun run and is a major Chamber fund-raiser.

“The Chamber’s focus this year is, ‘Greenwood first.’ We can’t control the national economy, but we can help ourselves,” Stevens said.
